Chinese Sign Zodiac
The Chinese Sign Zodiac begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice in late January or early February (Chinese New Years).
The Chinese sign zodiac is determined by the Moon rather than the Sun as used in the western astrology.
The 12 animal signs in the Chinese zodiac don't relate to the 12 months of the year, but to Jupiter's orbit (Jupiter takes approximately a dozen years to complete one orbit of the sun).
Chinese astronomers call the five major planets by the names of the element they are associated with: Venus corresponds to Metal (gold); Jupiter to Wood; Mercury to Water; Mars to Fire; Saturn to Earth.
The Yin Yang cycle gives the five elements a cycle of 10. Even years are yang, odd years are yin. The dragon is always yang, the snake is always yin, etc. This combination creates a 60-year cycle, starting with Wood Rat and ending with Water Pig.
The Five Elements are of major importance in the Chinese zodiac modifying and affecting the characteristics of each of the 12 signs. Each element has features that apply to both years and the animals. Each of the 12 animals are governed by an element plus Yin or Yang.
Metal's color is white and governs the Monkey, Rooster and Dog.
Water's color is black and governs the Pig, Mouse, and Ox.
Wood's color is green and governs the Tiger, Hare, and Dragon.
Fire's color is red and governs the Snake, Horse, and Sheep.
Additionally there is Earth who's color is yellow and is the central balance of all elements and can lend qualities to all 12 animals as well.
