The Chinese Zodiac moves in a 12-year cycle named after animals, starting with the Year of the Rat and ending with the Year of the Pig. The current cycle of the Chinese Zodiac began in 1984.

The Chinese year begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice, in late January or early February.
Chinese astrology is determined by the moon's motion through the zodiac rather than the motion of the Sun through the zodiac. There are no equivalent constellations like for the occidental zodiac.
A fundamental part of Oriental philosophy is the interrelationships among the five elements. The elements are either Conducive or Controlling. No element can be called stronger or weaker, they are all dependent on one another, and equal.
