EarthThe Earth, according to early Muslim astronomers, rested motionless at the center of a series of eight spheres, the last of which was studded with fixed stars revolving around the Earth daily from east to west, and at times from west to east. This belief was influenced by Sanskrit, Sasanian, Syraic, and Greek texts on astronomy.  Scientists believe there have been 5 distinct mass extinctions. The last one occurred 65 million years ago, when a meteorite collision probably triggered the extinction of the dinosaurs and other large reptiles, but spared small animals such as mammals. The Blue Marble's "perihelion" (closest approach to the Sun) is about January 3, and "aphelion" (farthest distance from the Sun) is about July 4 (near the solstices, which are on about December 21 and June 21).
