The Four Elements
The Four Elements of earth, air, fire, and water were according to Aristotle different aspects of a single substance called "primary matter". In Asian philosophy there are five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.
Fire and Earth are by tradition the two elements of creation. Air and Water are between the two extremes of fire and earth. Medieval European scholars accepted the theory of the Four Elements as the supreme authority on all physical matters for nearly two thousand years.
The ancient Greeks related human personality types to the elements as: Sanguine (wet & hot), Choleric (hot & dry), Melancholic (dry & cold), and Phlegmatic (cold & wet).
