The Inner Planets
The term Inner Planets includes the Earth and Mars and should not be confused with the "inferior planets", which designates those planets which lie inside the Earth's orbit (thus Mercury and Venus only).
The Inner Planets (inferior) of Mercury and Venus are located between the orbit of the Earth and the Sun. In astrology these planets have to do with our internal and personal life. Here we can find our inner qualities.
The Greeks, not realizing that it was the same star (planet) had two different names for Venus. They called its morning appearance, Phosphoros (Greek for light-bringer, which the Romans transformed into Lucifer), and they called its evening apparition, Hesperos (Greek for evening, which the Romans transformed into Vesper). Venus is sometimes called Earth's "sister planet", as the two are very similar in size and bulk composition. Venus indicates how we appreciate and measure our experience, how we value life.
The Romans named Mercury after the fleet-footed messenger god. Mercury is similar in appearance to the Moon as it is heavily cratered. It has no natural satellites and no atmosphere. Mercury tells us something about how our mind works, how we think and communicate -- our intrinsic brightness.
Mars is named after the Roman god of war. The Babylonians named the planet after Nergal, their deity of fire, war, and destruction, most likely due to the planet's reddish appearance. The red, fiery appearance of Mars is caused by iron oxide (rust) on its surface. Mars is associated with confidence, aggression, energy, ambition, and impulsiveness, and presides over the genitals.
